Preparing your Cat for Boarding and Going to the Vet

I have been asked by some, ‘what is the safest way to crate a cat.‘   Firstly, cats are very smart and cannot be taken for granted.   They can pick up on the slightest difference in your routine that could trigger them knowing if they are on their way to the Vets or to be boarded.   For many, this is when the pet carrier has been moved into sight.

Unfortunately, many people conduct the crating of their cat in reverse order.   The best way, is to first seclude the cat in a bathroom and close the door.  Then, go and retrieve the pet carrier and carefully bring it to the bathroom, without letting the cat out.   If it is difficult to crate your cat, the next step is to balance the carrier upright with the door open.   Then pick up the cat by the scruff of the neck which will typically make the cat go into a fetal-like position, which makes it very easy to then lower the cat into the upright carrier and close the door.   To entice a very nervous cat, feed them in the bathroom and plan to place them in the carrier immediately after eating.

When boarding your cat, you should plan to get the cat out of the house and to the boarder, before taking out suitcases and packing.  Otherwise, you may have lost your window of opportunity, because as soon as that cat sees the suitcases, they will typically go into hiding.

I, also suggest trying different techniques until you find one that works for you and your cat.   And, remember to use treats or their favorite toy, if you think this will entice them.  Lastly, don’t overfeed your pet before boarding, because they typically become very sick after transport.
